You can save and reopen your preferred Layouts within the Contact List.  Layouts include the Columns (Fields) to be shown as well as the arrangement of the Columns.

To save your Layout, arrange the Contact List how you want it and then right click.  Select Save Layout. In this example, the Contact List is being grouped by State so the Layout is saved with the name "Group by State".  To open a saved Layout, follow the same procedures except select Open Layout.
