The Rules tab within the Mailbox properties allows you to set up rules which define certain actions to be performed based on tones entered by the caller or by voice recognition.
See Animated Demonstration of Creating a Rule for a complete demo of this example described below:
In this example of creating a rule, we want to ask the contacts/call recipients, via text to speech, to press a tone button to tell us what their preferred method of contact is with us: phone, email, or not at all (DO NOT CALL). We then want ContactTalk to automatically update each contact's record with his/her answer. We will need to create 3 rules, one for each answer: 1) phone, 2) email, and 3) DO NOT CALL. (In the example, we will only create 1 of the 3 - Email).
Step 1: To do this, we would first Create a Field, in this case we'll call it "Preferred Contact Method".

Step 2: Next, we right click on the desired Mailbox within the Voice Action Item setup (this assumes you already created the Voice Action Item) and select Properties.
Step 3: We click on the Rules tab and right click within the Rules work area and select Add->New Rule.
Step 4: We name the rule "preferred contact method".
Step 5: We enter 2 in the "if the caller enters these tones" box.
Step 6: We type in a message (optional) that says "Please stand by".
Step 7: We then click on the Voice icon next to the "Say this first (optional)" box to bring up the Play or Say Editor. The phrase was automatically updated when we typed it in the "Say this first (optional)" box, so all we have to do is choose a voice to speak the phrase with. We chose Lee and then selected ok to close the Play or Say Editor.
Step 8: Then we select Post SQL from the "Then do this" drop down list and click on the SQL Builder Button to display the SQL Builder Wizard.
Step 9: We then select the field we created called "MyPreferredContactMethod" to be the Field to Be Set and typed "Email" (don't enter the quotes as the SQL Builder Wizard enters quotes for you). We click OK and the SQL statement is automatically built for us.
Step 10: We click OK again on the Rules Setup box and we are finished creating the 1st rule. We would then need to repeat the process (add a new rule) for both the answer "Phone" and "Do Not Call".
