Using the ContactTalk Mail Server

From ContactTalk's main menu select Options->Settings

Click the Email accounts button. Right click on the first account and select properties.

Go to the "Send Mail Settings" tab and click the "Use ContactTalk's Mail Server button.

Set the throttle to unlimited.

Be sure your name, Email address and reply to address are filled in.

The host, username, password and port will become grayed out.

Click the Test button to start the server.

When the mail server starts it's ready to start sending mail.

This may trigger your firewall to to alert you. Tell your firewall it's OK.

On the mail server's main window, click the "Will This Server Work" button. This will check if your ISP is blocking 25. If the test is unsuccessful then you can't use the server. Port 25 must be open.

If the test passed then the server is ready to receive Email from ContactTalk.

Go back to ContactTalk and fill in the Email to send a test to and click OK.

You will see each email received show up in the list. If an error occurred a red X will be shown and a description of the error. Otherwise a green check mark will show indicating success.

Click OK to save your Email settings. Queue up some Email action items and begin sending them.

ContactTalk will automatically start the Mail Server when needed. You don't need to start it manually.

At the bottom of ContactTalk's Email queue window is a setting "Number of simultaneous sends". Set that value to 4 or so.

When the Emails begin to send you will see them show up in the mail server.

Expect to see errors. Normally when you send mail you have to wait a while for your mail provider to send you any errors that occurred during sending. With the ContactTalk Mail Server you see the error immediately.

Some Errors you may encounter and their meaning.

All 500 error are permanent. ContactTalk will not reschedule these errors.

BTW 554 and 550 means the person your sending to no longer exists i.e. joe@blow.com is unknown.

421,451 means your mail might go through but might not. Some servers require the message be sent again to make sure it's not being sent by automated software. ContactTalk will reschedule these errors, up to 3 times. 421 Errors may also indicate your being flagged a spammer. You might want to reconsider modifying the content of your Emails.

If you click the Test option on the server, mail will be received but never sent to the recipient. This is a great way to test ContactTalk's ability to send mail. When in test mode the server will periodically mark some Emails as failed to simulate the real world.
